Race Across America 2010

RAAM 2010 is over but it is fair to say that Team Doc2Doc stunned the RAAM event with a great ride and a 2nd place finish.  We said we love to ride our bikes and it showed.  Averaging nearly 20 mph over 3000 miles with 100,000 feet of climbing, we showed that old doctors still have a little get up and go.

The unsung heroes of our team are clearly our amazing crew.  We need to sing their praises.  Dick Skinner, our crew chief, did a fantastic job preparing the team, managing the race and driving the RV.

Margo Spoerl kept us alive, making sure we ate and drank good food and drink, starting IVs on most of us, and driving the RV!

Nel Vickers did whatever was needed to keep the riders going.

Mike Berry kept us on track, always moving forward. Without him, this effort would not have happened.

Rich Skinner worked tirelessly.  The exhausting job of “Follow Car Driver” sounds easy enough but it is not.  Stressful, intense and relentless is how one would describe the job Rich did so well.

Cliff Smith, our most experienced crew member, worked passionately to keep his riders on the move.

Michael Hardart, another Driver, kept his riders safe, moving forward and laughing. Not an easy feat but most appreciated.

Leone Hanman, nighttime Driver, daytime Jack-of-All-Trades, stayed up all night driving and up all day cooking, rubbing feet or doing whatever else seemed helpful.

Brad Philips from Capital Bicycle was awesome. He drove at night and kept our bikes working 24 hours a day.

Alexa Zaledonis from Even Keel Wellness Spa was simply a savior. Her massage brought life back to exhausted bodies and her enthusiasm revived tired minds.

We can’t overstate the part the crew played in the success of the team.  We also can’t overstate our gratitude to all of our donors.  Still working on the final number but we and you have raised a lot of money for some great charities.  Thanks to all.

(BTW, it’s still not too late to donate. Thanks.)

We are riding to support the Helping Hands Foundation and Wellness House of Annapolis.  Please visit their websites to learn who they are.

More Thanks

A special note of thanks to our families. The riders and crew all have families who sacrificed in order to make our effort possible.  For some, that meant accepting months of training rides, phone calls, emails... essentially an absentee spouse.  For all, it meant losing their loved one for more than a week to the actual race.

Thanks to all of our supportive spouses, children, SOs and friends who made this success possible.

XOXO
